Easy Ideas For Storing Craft Supplies

By Belinda Osgood

Craft, in its many different forms, requires a variety of tools and supplies. Even if a person enjoys just one craft, they will find themselves struggling to find a safe home for all of the accouterments. When one dabbles in several crafts, as I do, then that issue multiplies to an almost overwhelming problem.

A place to keep all those scissors and needles, glues, pens, paints, and papers, ribbons and wool becomes essential to keep the items safe from damage and easy to access. Without a storage system, things easily become lost or ruined. It also contributes to a lack of productivity. Fortunately for the avid crafter, there are many storage solutions, which are either low cost or free to do. Many of them involve a little crafty handwork, too.

Small objects such as buttons and beads can be stored in almost any container from clean jars to empty matchboxes. For a tidy idea, collect empty matchboxes, and glue together to form a stack four by four. Wrap around the edge with decorative paper, leaving the ends uncovered. Make a hole in the front of each matchbox insert and thread through wool or ribbon, leaving a small loop on the outside as a handle. Tape the ends to the inside of the box. If desired, glue a sample of the contents to the front of each insert. You can make this set of 'drawers' as large as you need. Try making two stacks and join them back to back for a more stable creation, plus twice the storage.
Ready-made plastic drawers are available for such purposes. They are an ideal solution to storage problems however the cost is much greater.

Empty boxes are fantastic for keeping all sorts of supplies flat and clean. I use a pretty gift box someone gave me one Christmas to keep all my Christmas stamps together. A flat chocolate box houses pictures trimmed from a magazine, and another one for scraps of paper suitable for punching.

Small empty bottles, such as the kind used for vitamin supplements make ideal storage containers for left over punched shapes. I make use of people's punches I do not own and punch as many as I can fit into a bottle in a variety of colours. Simply glue one to the lid for easy recognition. I then keep the bottles together in an ice cream container. A box would work well, too.

Many crafts involve numerous supplies of paper of all sorts. The perfect solution to store these is a concertina file -- the sort that people often use to store old bills or important documents. Label each pocket with a colour and simply file each sheet in its appropriate slot. There are enough partitions to separate them even further. I have two pockets for each colour, one for plain and one for textured. It is not only a user-friendly way to locate the colour you need for a project; its portability is excellent for those craft sessions with friends.
Store balls of wool in ice creams containers. The lid will keep it dust and bug free. They are also easy to stack in a cupboard or wardrobe. Similarly, keep spools of ribbon tidy in a box or plastic container.

Invest in some cheap clear files. I have one to house sticker sheets, grouped according to theme. Another one holds patterns and instructions on various craft projects. A third one I reserve for photos. When sorting photos for a scrapbook I put a page's worth in each pocket. Then when I have time to make up a scrapbook page, the photos are already organised.
It is much more fun to save your dollars for spending on new supplies for your crafting pleasure. Make the most of the many household containers which are recyclable into useful storage solutions. You will save your bank account as well as the environment.

The Craft Show Advisor - Beginner's Guide to Your First Productive Craft Show

ที่ 5:27 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Bryan K Johnson

Tip 1 - Location, Location, Location

We've tried many different locations within a craft show and getting the key spots may be the key to doubling your sales. If possible, try to talk with the person arranging the booths to see if you can get a corner slot (i.e., on the end of the row), and even better, the closer to the entrance (if there is one), the better. There will typically be one main entry point where people will start from (or perhaps two), but try to get a spot towards the front, and a corner if possible. Also try to avoid locations where the rows are smaller and crowded. You can observe this at other shows to give you an idea of the best locations. Notice how busy the food vendor areas are? Not a bad idea to locate next to them!

Tip 2 - Go Vertical

Your display is a key as well to attracting visitors to your table, and if you lay all your products flat on the table, it's very hard to see in a crowd. They may have no idea what you're selling without some 'vertical marketing'. So try to set up a few products vertically (in our case, some shirts that are displayed on cardboard) or even just a nice looking sign with your company name and product information can be the eye-catching vertical element to your display.

Tip 3 - Work While you Work

People also like to see how products are made and like to see their product made to order - it conveys that custom special feeling, particularly if you are actually customizing the item with name, logo, etc. for that customer. Even if you're not (like in our case with tee shirts), you can still make the product in front of the customer at your booth. This will still attract attention to your booth - you're not just sitting around at the cash box - you're actually practicing your craft!
Tip 4 - Set Up Your Booth for Maximum Exposure
Remember to allow plenty of time to set up your booth, well before the show opens. With more experience, you can likely cut down on this time, but for starters, let's just say it always takes longer than you think it will take to set up your booth.

Another tip, use a tablecloth or cover to completely cover your tables down to the ground, and choose your colors wisely - i.e., something that will show off your products and complement them nicely (i.e., black covers work best for jewelry).

Tip 5 - You're Selling Yourself as a Crafter Too!

Remember, you're not selling to an Internet purchaser who clicks and buys. At craft shows, be conversational, be proud of how you make your items and explain how it's done. Don't just sit there like a bump on a log - be personal and your sales will greatly increase. I promise you on this one!

Tip 6 - Establish a Network of Crafters - Make Connections

Before and after the show, talk to other crafters, regardless of which products they may be selling. They are likely more experienced than you and will likely share with you further tips and where the next big show is! These relationships can last many years and you'll find that you will save yourself countless hours by picking up tips 'on the job' at shows. Many fellow crafters may become good friends!

Craft shows are great fun, can be a family event if you have a family-run business and can be very rewarding! Just remember for your profit margin, not to spend more at other craft booths than you actually take in at your own booth!

8 Craft Show Hints and Tips for Everyone's Success

ที่ 4:39 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Shasta Mclaughlin

1. Good Communication between people sharing a booth is key. Know who is signing up (double check that they actually did), who is paying, and what times people are working. If you are sharing a booth call them before the show to be certain they have registered and paid for the booth. Inform show promoters of the names of the people you are sharing a booth with.

2. Get registered early and pay early so your name can be included in all advertising. Budgets for advertising may depend on how many vendors are registered. Tell anyone you know who crafts how to contact show promoters. The more vendors shows have, the more public interest the show will have, the more word of mouth advertising the show will have and the budget for advertising will usually be bigger!

3. Tell everyone family, friends, at school, church, work, play groups, and at the park to bring a friend and come see you at the show. Your word of mouth advertising benefits everyone, as theirs benefits you. Send out postcards or newsletters with your regular advertising mention the show, place, date, time and your booth location (if known). Tell promoters if your workplace has a public bulletin board, offer to hang an ad there.

4. Bring your own table and chair unless you have specifically asked to rent one. You also need your own table cloth.

5. Make plans to use the space above and below a table to show/hide merchandise. Put a small bookcase or shelves on the table to put more merchandise on the table. Put a long table cloth on the table to hide extra merchandise that can be taken out as needed. Display merchandise at different heights, don't lay it flat on the table. Spread up to eye level instead of out.

6. Offer a door prize or drawing. This way you collect a name and phone number to call potential customers back. The easiest customer to sell to is one you've already sold to. Offer a special such as a percent off or two for one deal, everyone loves a deal. Inform promoters of any drawings or sales in advance.

7. Talk to people about your merchandise, or about the show. Be friendly & outgoing, they are here to see your merchandise so encourage them to stop and look. Don't try for the hard sell approach.

8. If you have problems with the show or with another vendor, please don't hesitate to tell promoters in private.

Model Steam Trains - The History Of Model Steam Trains

ที่ 4:31 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Adam M Fletcher

Steam trains were the first mechanical form of transport which first hit the United States soon after the civil war. These amazing machines were are turnaround for people everywhere making it so much easier for people to travel as well as making it easier to ship goods and services across the country.

Most people are aware of the train's history and the significance of the train and how it has helped build today's society. Know body is more interested about the steam trains history than railway enthusiasts and model steam train collectors.

Trains were traditionally powered by coal, the kinetic energy created after burning the coal powered the trains forward. This was a very simple design that was used in hundreds of trains, some of which are still in use today.

After the steam train dominated travel for such a long time the much faster, much cheaper electric train was introduced and today has almost replaced the traditional steam trains. These trains continue to be very cheap to run and much faster than old traditional trains. The old steam trains were replaced and much of our history was lost forever.

There were so many people who were sad to see the steam trains go. People soon began building and buying model steam trains. Today these are very popular and model train collecting is a hobby that lots of people are very passionate about.

Many of these model steam trains are exact replicas of those that were used all those years ago. Model steam train collectors spend hours and hours making sure that there model trains are exact replicas - it is amazing the amount of time these collectors spend making sure there model steam trains are perfect!

Classic steam trains look very stylish and this can be seen in most model steam train collections, books as well as images online. Some of these trains are fascinating and are a job to look at. The traditional trains are ideally what you are looking to buy, the main parts of these trains are the wheels, firebox, cab and also the chimney. They are also usually black or green in color.

Model steam trains can be expensive to buy from specialist stores however there are other options such as discount stores and online shops where you can also browse and buy model trains. I highly recommend that you don't spend a lot of money right away buying the model train of your dreams.

Selling Your Crafts

ที่ 4:51 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น

Crafting can be an enjoyable hobby for many people. Sometimes, you can even earn some extra money by crafting, or even turn it into a small business. If you are thinking about selling your crafts, you need to explore the different avenues of where you can actually sell them.

Craft Shows: This is the first place that comes to mind for most people when they want to get started selling their handmade items. Craft shows can vary in their size, entry fee, jury process and how successful they are. Before you actually participate in a show, visit many in your area first. Talk to the other vendors there and ask them how this particular show is. They will tell you if the show is worth doing or not. Look for established shows that have been in the same location for years. That means that the show is successful enough to be around for that length of time and a healthy customer base that comes to the same location year after year.
Notice the types of crafts sold at a particular show. Are they all handmade? Some promoters will allow in anyone selling anything, so you could have a unique pottery booth next to one selling cheap imports. Customers notice these things and will avoid shows that clearly aren't displaying quality handmade crafts.
Once you find a show you would like to participate in, contact the promoter. Depending on the show, the vendors can be booked as far as one year in advance. There will usually be an application to fill out, be prepared to send photographs of your work to be juried. Make a list of the shows you want to apply to, placing them in order of preference. Then get out your applications as soon as you can, that way if one is full or you are rejected, then you can quickly apply to the next one on the list.

Home Parties: If you have a craft that demonstrates well, you can consider a home party. This would involve either hosting one in your own home, or have a host/hostess do one for you - and he/she would invite the guests. You would bring your items, set them up and do a demonstration or talk on the process of making the items. Then you would either take orders or have stock there to sell. You can work out a hostess gift or incentive for sales and certainly book another party through any of the attending guests.

Wholesale: If the idea of going to craft shows or home parties does not appeal to you, then consider wholesaling your crafts to small boutiques or other types of stores that specialize in the items that you make. You need to make sure that you price your items high enough for you to make a profit on them, yet at a price that the store owner can mark up and make a profit for themselves. Also, a well priced craft will move quickly, making more sales for you and the store owner. To wholesale well, you need to have a supply of your craft items ready to go. Store owners do not want to wait for an order, as they have short seasonal times to sell items and need to maximize that time. For wholesaling, you will need a very good accounting system for invoices.

Internet Sales: Don't neglect the internet. There are many people who shop for crafts online. Hosting a website can be quite inexpensive. The most important thing is to have excellent photographs. Invest in a good digital camera, or have someone qualified take pictures of your items for you. Remember that the photo is all the shopper will see; they cannot pick up, touch or smell the items. There are some people who sell exclusively online and having a website can capture extra sales for you, even if you do other means of selling.

Trying one or all of the above ways to sell your crafts will help you find the niche to succeed. You may find that a combination of several of these will give you the best results. Keep good records and you will learn which avenues are the most profitable for you.

The American Flyer Model Train

ที่ 4:28 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By John Vanse

Although The American Flyer model trains were at their peak of popularity between the 1940s and the 1960s, they actually had a long history before that, and their popularity seems to be on the increase again today.

William Hafner, working as a toymaker in Chicago, developed a clockwork motor for use in toy cars in the very early part of the 19th Century and by 1905 was making toy trains using that clockwork motor.

With a friend, William Coleman, and using a small hardware manufacturing business known as the Edmonds-Metzel Hardware Company, Hafner began producing toy clockwork trains during 1906-7. These Edmond-Metzel trains were sold so successfully through some major retailers that the brand name The American Flyer was adopted for marketing purposes and by 1910, the name of the hardware company had been changed to American Flyer Manufacturing Company.
The American Flyer trains proved very popular, in part because they were lower priced than other makes popular at that time, and also because their detailing made them more realistic than other low budget model trains.

Hafner left the partnership in 1913 to start up his own company and Coleman's American Flyer trains did extremely well during the First World War as they had no competition in the US from the German companies. By 1918, the first of the American Flyer electric trains were in production and business boomed during the 1920s but declined sharply during the Great Depression.

In 1938, William Coleman Jr, son of the company's founder, who had taken over the business following his father's death in 1918, sold the American Flyer to the A C Gilbert Company. Gilbert had been manufacturing and selling an extensive range of toys but not toy trains. He moved the company from Chicago to New Haven, Connecticut and immediately began to re-design the trains. He re-developed the American Flyer as S-scale in 1939 , a scale which was a modification of the very popular O gauge model trains then on the market. The S scale, which scales trains to the 1:64 ratio and made them smaller than the O scale trains, had a number of major advantages in terms of the track and track layouts.

In 1946 Gilbert made another major change to the American Flyer. Until that stage model electric trains had run on three rails, with the centre rail carrying the current. Gilbert developed a two rail system for running the American Flyer. This two-rail track, which had seven-eighths inches between the rails, made the track layout, and hence train operation, more realistic as the track now looked like 'real train track'.

With the advent of television - to distract both younger people and older people from their regular hobbies - together with the rise of the discount chain stores which undercut prices and demanded lower wholesale prices, A C Gilbert Company ran into trouble and in 1962 was sold to Wrather Group. The new owners produced lines of toys, including model trains, which were of very poor quality and sales dropped sharply until in 1966 production of the American Flyer ceased. By 1967 the Company was bankrupt.

At this time, Lionel Corporation, which was itself in financial trouble although it had been the leading model train manufacturer for many decades, bought the rights to the American Flyer. However, by 1969 Lionel Corporation itself was bankrupt and sold the rights to the manufacture of its model trains, including the American Flyer, to General Mills.

General Mills began selling some of the original Gilbert designed American Flyer trains by 1979 but in 1984 sold its Lionel Company section to a toy manufacturer, Kenner who on-sold the company to Richard Kughn in 1985.

Kughn was very successful for over 10 years with the Lionel and American Flyer trains but sold in 1996 to Wellspring Partners who set up the company Lionel LLC, which operates today selling a range of model trains, including the S-scale American Flyer. Initially Lionel LLC concentrated on promoting the O and O27 scale model trains of its original lines but since 2002 has been releasing more and more American Flyer models.

The American Flyer then, is now more that 100 years old, and has gone though a number of ownerships and fluctuations in popularity. Dedicated S-scale enthusiasts now believe that this renowned model train is once again making a resurgence.

RC Model Boats

ที่ 4:25 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Rob David Stone

There is a thrill experienced when you buy a model RC boat and able to control it skimming across the water as though you were controlling the real thing. Age is irrelevant as the rc model boat hobby is for people of all ages young to old, male or female. You can either buy a boat or build one from scratch, either way they are fantastic fun.

Due to this thrill and self pride its always good to build a RC boat yourself, many local model shops sell all the parts you will need and the glue and other connection materials as well as craft places offering all sorts of transfers and stick ons. If you have never built your own model, you may think it sounds very complicated but infact it is much easier than you would think with the instructions being very user friendly.

It is obvious though that building your own rc model boat will bring you hurdles that you would not normally come across if you purchased a boat but there are so many helpful forums online and the local shops who are always willing to help. They aren't just there to sell, it is their hobby to. The hard work that goes into building your rc boat does come across as well worth it even before the boat is finished as the different stages soon start to look like the final product.

You may find down the line that your boat suffers a few setbacks such as parts falling off or worse case scenario, sinks in the water. This all leads to experience though and not to be look at as a negative thing. If everything worked first time, then learning would not be as much fun.
Many people who do build their own RC boats have no had any guidance from experience people so magazines, websites and talking to others can leave you gathering much more information than you realised was initially involved and does give confidence.

Being patient is a good quality as reading instructions, putting small parts together requires a steady hand and patience of character. Even the final touches require a little skill which builds over time, and that's the application of the glossy coat of paint required to seal the unit and give it a professional look, and even more importantly make it water tight as well as using water sealant.

Other RC Models can be built by your self but the engine in a rc boat requires more attention to detail than the others. Get one drop of water inside the hull or engine and the whole project can come to an abrupt end. The radio equipment is just as important so take your time and ask question instead of guessing if need be.

At the end of the day, to build a RC Model Boats are a time consuming process but well worth it when you see what you have achieved. With patience and a sense of imagination, to see the final product in your mind before you have finished, will stead you on your way.

How to Make Fimo Beads

ที่ 4:12 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Hanan Ben Lulu

Introduction

In this installment of How to Make Fimo Beads we will learn, in few simple stages, the process of creating Fimo beads. The arts and design however, are on you.
Fimo beads are handmade beads that originally came from South Africa. They are generally made of polymer clay, but they can be created from nearly any kind of malleable material that anyone can purchase at a hobby or craft store. Once a set of beads have been created, they can be used to make many different kinds of jewelry, including necklaces and bracelets.

Ingredients

To make Fimo beads, it is important to assemble all of your materials before you begin. You will need polymer clay (or any other type of malleable clay-like material that may be available to you. You will also need some sort of device to help you make shapes other than a sphere (you can make a sphere with just your hands). A knitting or crochet needle will also be needed in order to make the holes in the center of the beads. Finally, a high temperature oven will be required to allow the beads to harden. Varnish and paint will also be necessary in order to customize your creations. If you have a pasta machine at home which has been collecting dust, a perfect sacrifice is the making of your Fimo beads.

Knead and Balls

First take the clay from the package starting with approximately one ounce. Squeeze and gently warm the clay between your hands rolling it into a long thin snake. Repeat this process until the clay stretches out, without breaking, when pulled apart. Try to manipulate the clay long enough to remove obvious air trapped within the clay. Once the clay is easily malleable, you should divide it into small balls of equal or different sizes. You should make sure that the balls are of equal size in order to create more authentic Fimo beads, but they can be any size that you wish for your own jewelry making purposes. If you managed to get a pasta machine use it to roll your clay out into sheets in your chosen thickness. I usually lay down a sheet of wax paper on my work area for easy cleanup. A sharp cutting blade is required and should be kept separately with your other Fimo bead making supplies. Once your beads have been shaped, you can make a hole through the center of them with the needle you set aside earlier. Simply slide the needle through the center of the bead and then leave it in.

The baking

Now it is time for the baking process. After your beads have been sculpted, hang them in an oven and set the temperature to approximately 265 Fahrenheit. The beads should be hardened in about thirty minutes. Proper baking time is essential to allow the polymer to fuse completely. If you do not bake for the correct length of time your finished pieces will be weak. Once the beads have cooled you can remove the needle safely without jeopardizing the shape of the bead. As a final bit of customization, you can paint and varnish the beads to your specifications.

Some Safety

Never breathe in the fumes while baking and be sure to use an exhaust fan. Store your clay away from direct sunlight and heat in plastic bags or plastic containers. The clay will retain its workability indefinitely if you store properly.

Quilt-Kits-Quilting-Patterns.com has discovered a totally new and unique quilting pattern from down under. An Australian by the name of Chris Timmons has copyrighted a quilt pattern that is re-kindling an art form of quilting unlike any other in decades.

Seldom does something this spectacular become available to re-create and possess!
Quilting Patterns come in a variety of designs and patterns but there are those that really stand out and catch your eyes, the Twisted Bargello is one such quilt pattern you simply MUST SEE!
Twisted Bargello quilt pattern has an optical illusion or three-dimensional effect if you will, that causes you to take a second look once your eyes first catch a glimpse of it. There are numerous quilt kits and quilting patterns available and many of us have always had a tendency to favor the traditional quilting patterns like the Wedding Ring quilt pattern, Log Cabin quilt pattern, or the Lone Star, but occasionally, a new and pleasingly different quilting pattern emerges and can become a new standard from which we choose to mimic.

Chris Timmons is an Australian native that has shared this remarkable quilting pattern for all of us to make and enjoy. As time goes on, the ever-popular Nine-Patch-Criss-Cross Quilt, Lone Star or Pineapple piece of Cake quilting patterns may just share equal billing with the Twisted Bargello.

Quilt Kits allow anyone with a sewing knack to take quilting patterns and put their sewing abilities to work and create personal masterpiece quilts to share with friends and family for years to come. Passing on a quilt to future generations is a legacy that has blessed many families literally around the world.

Quilting Patterns and designs date back to the settlers that found our great nation and we commemorate them in their accomplishments by keeping their patterns alive today. Whenever you have a quilt that you’ve started and haven’t found time to finish, think of how many people, family or otherwise, that will treasure your quilting handiwork for years beyond your lifespan. I know some of the greatest gifts my grandmothers gave me, are the quilts, pillows, and other hand sewn articles that I won’t part with until it’s time to pass on to my grandchildren.

Sea Shell Jewelry and Craft Ideas

ที่ 7:24 AM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Alan Reisch

Anyone that has ever been to the beach has spent a little time checking out all the different sea shells and treasures that have washed ashore. Most of us have even picked up a few "pretty ones" with the thought of doing something creative with them later.

Of course, just like so many other things in our life, we put them away only to forget about our "treasures" until spring cleaning some year. Again we think of all the possibilities we could use the sea shells for, only to repeat the previous cycle. Fortunately, all it takes to break the cycle is a little excitement and motivation.

The potential of sea shells is limited only by your imagination. One common problem of working with shells is how fragile and brittle they can be. The easiest way to alleviate this problem is to attach the shells to a hard surface such as wood. Great examples of this method are frames, jewelry boxes, and mirrors. All it takes is glue that bonds well with wood and organic material, some unfinished wood products, your shells, and some creativity.

To finish your design off, a non-yellowing clear gloss will keep the shells shiny and provide some protection and durability. Most of the products you need for these projects can be purchased at your local craft store.

Another use for your beautiful sea shells is handmade jewelry. I know beading has become a very popular hobby and business venture; sea shells can be used in the same way. You may have to take a jewelry making class or spend some time practicing techniques and designs, but the end results can be amazing and very satisfying. Again, what type of jewelry you make and how you use the sea shells is nearly limitless. So it's time to find that old shoe box of sea shells and start making you own works of art.

Silk Quilting Fabric

Silk quilts are relatively unusual although not totally unheard of. Silk tie quilts have been popular for many years, and silk quilts made from kimonos are also relatively popular.
Working with silk sounds very elegant – the fabric drapes really well, and it feels wonderful – yet it presents its challenges.

Silk fibers are very strong. There are some real benefits to its strength – the quilts are durable and the threads will not break easily.
Because of the strength of the fibers, silk fabric does not finger press well. To ensure flat seams, you need to press frequently while you are piecing, or pin the seam allowances in place prior to sewing.

Silk fabric may retain pinholes. Using regular size pins and needles to sew silk may result in pinholes you can’t get rid of. There are special silk pins to use for pinning. And for machine stitching, use a thinner sewing machine needle.

Silk fabric is slippery and doesn’t retain its shape. One of the things that makes silk so nice is that you can drape it, gather it, fluff it, and many other things. The problem is that when you try to sew it, the fabric slides around. Without tons of pins, the resulting piecing can be completely misshapen.

One solution is to iron a lightweight interfacing on each individual piece. One option is to iron the interfacing onto the entire piece of fabric and then cut the individual pieces from that. The interfacing adds some bulk to the seams and makes it a little more difficult to press the seam allowances to one side.

Another option is to cut the interfacing into individual shapes, without the seam allowances. Then iron the interfacing pieces onto the wrong side of the silk fabric, remembering to leave at least ½ “ between the pieces of interfacing to allow for the ¼” seam allowances. This takes extra time, and may be worth it. Your project will be less frustrating to sew and will probably be the shape you want it to be.

Silk fabric is higher priced and not as easy to find as other fabrics. Because of the cost, many fabric stores do not carry silk at all, or may have a limited selection of solid colors. Using kimonos or ties, available at some second-hand clothing stores, is an option.

Using these types of clothing for fabric presents its challenges. In addition to working around the seams and finding expanses of fabric that are large enough for your pieces, it helps to pay attention to the straight grain and cross grain of the fabric. Without selvedges, this is a little more difficult.

Final thoughts. With all of its challenges, silk makes a fabulous quilt or wall hanging. Silk quilts are unusual and highly prized. The colors of silk fabric tend to be more vibrant than cotton or wool. In addition, you can use silk batting in your quilt, and make it 100% silk.

Wool Quilting Fabric

It is relatively common to use wool in quilts. These quilts are outstanding for cold weather.
Wool retains heat extremely well. Wool probably retains heat better than cotton, and has the same wicking properties (they draw moisture away from your body and allows it to evaporate.) Wool quilts were very common during the Civil War, and were credited with saving many lives during the harsh winters.

Wool is a little more difficult to work with than cotton. Because it is generally thicker (each thread of wool is thicker than each thread of cotton), the seam allowances don’t finger press well, and will require pins to keep them in place.
Because of the thickness, the quilt will be bulkier, and it may require a stronger sewing machine needle to sew through all of the layers.

Hand quilting is different because of the thickness of the fabric and also the weave. Some wools have fewer threads per inch than cotton, so your quilting stitches should be longer, and you may want to use a thicker thread.

Until recently, wool was mostly “Dry Clean Only.” Each strand of wool has little barbs on it. When they become wet and agitated (as in a washing machine), the barbs join together, never to be separated. This is called “felting,” and creates a piece of fabric or quilt that is about 1/3 its original size. very disappointing if you have spent hours on the project and were hoping to would remain the same size.

New wool is on the market that they say is washable and will not shrink. Using a new biotech process, wool can be treated so it is washable in your home washing machine and will not shrink. This is a great benefit, and will require quilters to know the difference and which wool they have, so a tragic mistake is not made.

Wools tend to be more expensive than cotton, and the variety of colors and patterns available is somewhat limited. As quilters venture into other types of fabric, the selection is increasing, so look for a wider variety of wool in the future – including hand-dyed wools.

Final thoughts. With all of its challenges, wool makes great quilts. They are cuddly and warm, and drape very nicely. Try wool batting in the quilt for a 100% wool quilt.
