The word quilt comes from the Latin word (culcita), which means a tied and padded mattress that is similar to a Japanese futon. Quilting is a needlework technique that uses two or more layers of fabric. A middle layer is usually used for padding and warmth. The middle layer is usually a batting made from either cotton or polyester. In the earlier days some household budgets were very limited and worn out blankets were sometimes used, in handmade quilts, for the middle layer.
Up until modern times the handmade quilt was a very necessary household item. Its' main purpose was to provide warmth. As homes and the way they are heated became more modern, quilting became more of a decorative art form.
Quilting appears to have originated in Asia sometime before the first century C.E. A quilted linen carpet dating from that time was found in a Siberian cave tomb and is believed to be the first ever known quilted object.
When we think of handmade quilts a lot of different images may come to mind. We may imagine the patchwork quilts the pioneer housewives would quilt for their families, the scrap handmade quilts made by the loving housewives during the great Depression era, the quilting bees of the early nineteen hundreds, and the more modern and beautiful pieces of art quilted by some of the best Artisans of our time.
Most of us have a passion for handmade quilts. From the simple to the most elaborate, from the patchwork quilt to the applique, from the old handmade quilts to the new handmade quilts. The art of quilting will never cease.

There are a few basics you should know about rugs. Once you understand how to identify what makes a rug valuable, you'll have a greater chance at purchasing a better rug.
Rug fibers usually consist of wool in most mid to upper end rugs. High-end rugs may also have silk. Synthetic fibers such as acrylic, polyester, nylon, and olefin (polypropylene) can be found in more economical rugs. Cotton, sea grass, and sisal rugs are often moderate rugs. Your most stain resistant rugs will contain synthetic fibers, but won't feel as soft and luxurious. All other natural fiber rugs are susceptible to staining if spots aren't cleaned immediately.
What do you look for in a rug? Quality of wool, type of dye, and knots. Simply because a rug is expensive, doesn't mean it has good dyes or is constructed well. Make sure you know what it is and shop around first. Above all, be extra cautious about purchasing a rug outside the United States.
The quality of a wool fiber depends largely on the type of dye used. Fine wool is vegetable dyed with fruits, roots, and plants. Cheaper wools and nylons can be dyed with synthetic dyes. A rug should always be tested for colorfastness by taking a damp white cloth and gently rubbing it into the fiber. If any color transfers on the cloth, the dyes are unstable. Also look closely at the fiber to check the integrity. Make sure it isn't unraveling. Very fine wool fibers can often look as soft as silk even to an experienced rug professional.
The construction of a rug is also a key factor. To determine if the rug is handmade, turn it upside down and look at the back. If you cannot see the pattern as clearly as on the face, the rug is not handmade. If the rug passes this first test, look at the fringe. The fringe should be an extension of the yarn inside the rug and should not look like it was sewed on separately. Many rugs that claim to be hand stitched are stitched by hand with a machine. You can expect to pay at least $500 for a small 3x4 hand made rug.
BEWARE of rugs with cloth backings. These rugs have something to hide. The cloth is covering either flaws in a handmade rug or even worse, glue that is holding the backing together. Glued backings have a tendency to get torn when the rug is moved or cleaned.
If you are looking for an alternative to a handmade rug, you might look at a Karastan. These wool rugs closely resemble hand made rugs, are cheaper in price, and rarely have the problems associated with cheaper wool rugs. If you aren't ready to invest several thousand dollars in a rug, these will be your best bet.

How a typical crochet pattern looks
This is an extract of what a basic crochet pattern looks and how the stitches are described.

Double knitting yarn / 4 mm Crochet hook

Starting at the top (Head)

Phulkari Art of Punjab - A Novel Indian Craft

Punjab is a happening place in India. Various craft forms often synchronize with the popular folk music and produce an enchanting effect. People of Punjab are said to be very hard working and diligent at their vocation. Phulakri is predominantly a handiwork of the female folks of Punjab. The literal meaning of phulkari is flowering. This craft involves the embroidery of the flowering patterns on dupattas, shawls and other garments.
Evolution of the Craft:
Phulkari is done with huge interest and enthusiasm by the women. They started doing it in the backdrop of remaining free at home while their husbands were working away in the fields. It started off in the sixteenth century as amateurish disposition and evolved to a developed craft in 19th century.
How Phulkari is Done:
This craft is done as making artistic small darn stitch over the cloth. These stitches are done in innumerable designs making the cloth immensely beautiful. When the stitches are made all over the body of the cloth, the prepared piece is called "Bagh". The base cloth used for this purpose is home-spun, locally-woven and dyed khadi. The thread used is silk yarn also called Pat, that is imported from the various corners of Kashmir, Bengal, China and Afghanistan.
Colors and Designs:
The popular colors used in making phulkari are golden, yellow, crimson, orange, green, blue and pink. You may get to see plenty of designs in geometrical as well as natural patterns. Among figures, prominently of flowers, leaves, birds, animals and of human are popular. The figures of vegetables, pots, buildings, rivers, sun and moon are also displayed quite often. The baghs carrying dhoop-chhaon (sun-shade) patterns are very popular all over Punjab. Similarly, Dhaniya bagh (coriander), Motia Bagh (jasmine), Satranga Bagh (rainbow), Leheria Bagh (wavy) etc. are also very famous. Most sought after phulkaris are said to be Sainehi Phulkaris that carry the scenes of rural Punjab.
Significance of Phulkaris:
Phulkari craft has played a significant role in defining the popular mood of Punjab. The phulkari designing and the scenes displayed on the clothes has been inspiration for various folk songs and other cultural activities. They show the feelings and emotions of the people. Phulkari done garments are exchanged in the familial ties essentially. It is said that bride when leaves for the house of groom, she is given many sets of Baghs to be worn in the in-law's home. They have some religious significance too. They are used as the canopy over the holy scripture of Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib.

How Phulkari is Done:
This craft is done as making artistic small darn stitch over the cloth. These stitches are done in innumerable designs making the cloth immensely beautiful. The popular colors used in making phulkari are golden, yellow, crimson, orange, green, blue and pink. You may get to see plenty of designs in geometrical as well as natural patterns. The baghs carrying dhoop-chhaon (sun-shade) patterns are very popular all over Punjab. 3 Fall and Halloween Themed Crafts for Elementary School Kids

Fall is the perfect time for kids to do crafts. Halloween is an especially crafty time. Most kids enjoy carving out their own pumpkin, but there are lots of other crafts they can make to have during this season.
Jack O’Lantern Terra Cotta Planter
For this craft you will need:
1. A terra cotta pot and dish
2. Orange, green and black craft paint
3. Paintbrushes, small, medium and large sizes 4. A plant of your choice to put in the pot
Begin this craft by spreading out newspaper to protect the surface you are working on. It is probably best to “double up” the newspaper and put down two layers of newspaper.
This craft is for a Jack O’Lantern face on a terra cotta pot. Paint the pot entirely orange; do not paint the rim of the pot. Use one or two coats, make sure the pot is nice deep orange color. Allow this to dry completely before going on to the next step.
Now you are ready to add the Jack O’Lantern’s face. A little tip in doing this: you will find this a bit easier if you sketch out the face you like on a piece of paper, and then lightly sketch it onto the planter so your child can paint into the lined area. Paint the features black. Give this one or two coats, again making sure the paint is thick.
Add a green line around the rim of the pot. Paint all around the rim of the pot using your green paint. Allow this to dry.
Once your pot is dry, you are ready to re-pot the plant into the planter.
Fall Leaves Barrette
This craft is great for girls and will go nicely with a Fall outfit.
For this craft you will need:
1. Silk leaves of traditional Fall leaves, golden, orange and red
2. A low-temp glue gun
3. Large barrettes (can be found at your craft store)
Plug the glue gun in and wait until it is hot. Add a glue stick to the glue gun. You will know when the glue gun is hot typically because the glue at the tip will be ready to melt (squeeze the trigger to test this). Follow your glue gun’s directions. Most children will need supervision using a glue gun.
Take the barrette and place a several small dots of glue on the barrette across the entire barrette. Remember that this glue cools quickly so you need to work fast.
Place the silk fall leaves along the barrette. You may want to place them diagonally, or use only two or one leaves depending on the size and shape of the barrette. Use your best judgment as to how many leaves to select.
Allow the glue to set, this usually takes thirty minutes. Once this has done you can use the barrette and enjoy.
Black Cat Halloween Card
This is a great craft that will give your child a Halloween card to send to their grandparents or family or friends to celebrate the holiday.
For this craft you will need:
1. Blank cards and envelopes
2. Black card stock
3. Yellow card stock
4. A gold metallic paint pen
5. Scissors
6. Non-toxic glue
Begin this craft by cutting the shape of a cat out of the black paper.
Tip: if you have trouble cutting out a cat, look for a cat in your clip art program and use this shape to guide you.
Then cut a large full moon out of the yellow paper. Once you have both of these cut out, glue the full moon to the paper first. Then glue the black cat to the paper, with the black cat halfway on the full moon.
Write about a quarter of the way down on the full moon “Happy Halloween” using the gold metallic paint pen. Allow the paint and the glue to dry. Once this is dry, your card is ready for you to send.

To ensure your Halloween pumpkin lasts as long as possible, buy one that is ripe and in excellent condition. Check for bruises, soft spots, mould, mildew etc, and remember that the flesh should be firm, and the stem should not look dried out. Halloween is nearly here once more, and if you're like many people, you'll be making a Halloween pumpkin lantern. Carved vegetable lanterns, or Jack O'Lanterns as they're often known, are part of an ancient tradition that originated with the Celts.
However the original lanterns made by the Celts in Europe were usually made from turnips, swedes or mangelwurzels. Halloween lanterns made from pumpkins only became popular relatively recently, after the Halloween holiday started to be widely celebrated in the US, where pumpkins are plentiful. They have since gained popularity elsewhere in the world too, thanks to the relative ease with which they can be carved, and the brilliant orange glow they produce when lit up.
Pumpkins are very versatile and can be carved and decorated carved in any number of ways and it's very easy to produce a lantern that will make a beautiful addition to your Halloween decorations.
There are two basic approaches you can take to decorating your pumpkin. The first is to carve a face or other design into the flesh, and the second is to paint the pumpkin's surface. You might then like to embellish it further. Of course, you can always combine these approaches, and produce a more ornate and unusual pumpkin!
Carving Your Pumpkin
Halloween pumpkins are usually carved, so they can be used as lanterns. When you have a mixed group of children, it's sometimes difficult to come up with something that will suit both boys and girls. Dinosaurs seem to be one of the animals that fascinate boys and girls alike, at least in small size. That's makes Dorothy a perfect selection for a craft for a party that includes boys and girls, and each can have fun with the idea. If you are crafty, you may find a way to alter the original template so that the boys can make a boy dinosaur.
The materials required to make Dorothy the Dinosaur include an empty toilet paper roll, glue, scissors, crayons or markers, and a piece of paper, preferably construction paper. After you print the template, the children will color the pieces where needed and cut them out.
Before they do anything else, they need to glue to large rectangular piece around the tube. The head and arms are the next pieces to be attached, and next glue the legs onto the bottom of the toilet paper roll. The children can choose how to attach the legs, but in the sample, the creator attached the legs so that Dorothy looked like she was sitting down with her feet in front of her. The final step is to bend the tab of the tail and glue it to the back in order to create a 3D effect.
If you create a variation for the boys, the same basic steps will apply. About all that you need to change is Dorothy's hat and collar, which you can easily vary.
