Using Handmade Crafts As Gifts
By Amit Kishore Verma
Handmade crafts are not only a representation of your creativity; they make very good gifts for your lived ones. Here is a look at some of the ways you can use handmade crafts as gifts.
You can make a bead necklace for an older lady or a small kid. You just need a solid thread with some colorful beads and some charms like an angel or a fairy. You can also add some initials to the bead necklace to make the bead necklace personalized.
If you are into leather crafting, you can craft some daily use accessories and offer them as a gift to a dear one. If the recipient is a female, you can choose to make a leather bag or a purse for her. If the recipient is a male you can easily make him a wallet or even a leather belt, which he can use on a daily basis.
If you are into wood crafting, you can design various things. You can make a pen stand, with the name of the recipient on it. If you are willing to spend some time you can make a book shelf or a DVD rack for a friend or a relative.
If you have a hobby of making paper crafts you can easily design book covers, greeting cards, stickers and many other things. They are easy to make and are perfect for kids or elder people.
You can easily make these handmade gifts as they will just be a part of pursuing your hobby. Also, the whole process of making these gifts is not time taking and shows how much love and compassion you have for the recipient. Creating Your Own Design on Fabric
By Trish Doornbosch
With all the choices at your local fabric store, why design your own? Because when you're the designer you can personalize your fabric just the way you want it.
Need a summer tote bag? White cotton fabric with a brushed blue wave design or a simple sun motif provides that touch of personalization. For inspiration take a look through your mail order catalogs or online at home store web sites.
To get color on the fabric you're either going to dye it or paint it. There are so many options for dyes and fabric paints and each one has its own methods, so you'll need to read the directions carefully. You'll also need to know what type of fabric you have. Not all dyes work on all fabrics and the dye packet will tell you which fabrics to use.
You can buy fabric "blanks," that is, scarves, bags, or clothing already made in a light fabric and that you can add your own designs to.
If you have a couple of yards of fabric and want to use just one or two colors, dyeing will work the best. If you want to put a more detailed design on a smaller piece of fabric, use fabric paints. With fabric paints you can paint a design on fabric with a brush just like you would paint a picture. But that's just the beginning. You can also spray paint, stamp, use stencils or a silk screen. You can wet the fabric and drip different colors onto the fabric where it will blossom and pool like a watercolor. You can make your own stamps by cutting "foamie" sheets and gluing them onto cardboard or foamcore blocks. There are an unlimited amount of stamps and stencils in your local hobby store that are not just for scrapbooking. Use them.
You may want to keep part of your design unpainted. This is when you use a resist. Depending on whether you are dyeing or painting, again, there are several choices to do this.
For dye baths, you will need a resist that will stand up to the immersion in water for long periods of time, as in a batik. You can buy special batik resists from the same suppliers who sell the dyes. If you are going to paint, you can use a liquid resist such as washable school glue or a flour paste (cornflour and water mixed to a thick liquid consistency). Once dry, these resists will keep paint from soaking into the fabric. Watery paints may bleed a little under a thin coat of resist. This isn't always bad-you may like the effect. Other ideas for resists include masking tape and cutting your own designs from wax paper or freezer paper. These are not usually re-usable.
By personalizing your own fabric, you get to use the colors and motifs you want. It isn't hard to do and you're also stretching your creative and artistic muscles. And you can bet that no-one else will ever be carrying the same bag as yours.

Printies is Taking Arts and Crafts Digital
By John T. Marshall
The Printies™ line is a new line of products offered by Technosource® that is poised to challenge the old way of doing arts and crafts. This new style offers kids the chance to make their own stuffed toys with the use of their home computer. The toy making gets very sophisticated here as kids can come up with completely elaborate and personalized designs. However, the most impressive thing is how easy it is compared to the old style arts and crafts.
Instead of dealing with the past issues, of spilled glitter, lost stickers, finding popsicle sticks, or bad glue, kids can now discard all these things by opting for the new way of doing arts and crafts.
Crafts in the new era let kids push their creativity to the max while eliminating a ton of the negatives of craft making like the ones mentioned above. Imagine how much more enjoyable craft making will be for your kid with one of the Printies™ lines. Currently, they are promoting three different ones: Jungle Safari Design Studio, Ocean Adventure Design Studio, and the Pet Design Studio. All three offer different stuffed animal options that fit their category. For example, the Jungle Safari Design Studio will have lions and other similar Jungle ones and the Ocean Adventure Design Studio will have aquatic themed stuffed animals.
However, regardless of which one kids choose, the important thing is how a new product like this can change arts and crafts in a major way. Why deal with all these extra materials if you are a teacher, when you can choose another option that is cleaner and results in better quality end products. If the toy fairs around the country are any indication, kids love these things and is why these lines should do real well. The real challenge would seem more likely to be which ones the kids decide on whether they like the Ocean Adventure, Pet, or Jungle Safari Deisgn Studio. Odds are pretty good that this type of craft making will become addictive and we will see more and more products like these.
For more information on this fun new arts and crafts toy, check out Ocean Adventure Design Studio, or Jungle Safari Design Studio

Creative Gift Hampers
By Lulie Swanepoel
We all, at one time or another, have difficulty in deciding on gift purchases. This is usually the time when most people turn to "the safe gifts list ". Items such as chocolates, candles or bubble bath may not have failed in the past, yet they also seem quite impersonal and rather mundane.
Why a gift hamper? The popularity of gift hampers has increased drastically in recent years simply due to the convenience. It takes the guesswork out of finding that one perfect gift. Gift hampers aren't boring and you can choose appropriately how personal the selection of gifts in the hamper should be. The uniqueness of creative gift hampers lies in that they are much appreciated by recipients and even when prearranged; a hamper remains a thoughtful and personal gift.
Hampers give the recipient a variety of gifts. Even if there is an item the recipient does not want or need, there will surely be a few others they will find to be perfect. This comes in handy if the recipient is notorious for being finicky, a gift hamper will even delight those with the most discerning tastes.
Gift hampers prove to be appropriate for all occasions, including the celebration of a new baby, Mother's Day, Father's Day, anniversaries or even as a thank-you gift. The same could be said for different types of people. No matter who they are, their interests, hobbies or age, a gift hamper makes an ideal present.
Corporate Gift Hampers There are many outlets where wide selections of gift hampers are readily available. In instances where you are giving a corporate gift hamper, it would be wise to know a few things about the client or company.
With regards to a corporate gift hamper for a company, know their culture. Is it an artistic and trendy environment or a more conservative, elegant company? Know the etiquette of the company to ensure that your gift hamper reflects this and you avoid upsetting anybody.
In the case of a client, it would be easier to choose an appropriate hamper if you know a few individual details without being too personal. If you know their hobbies, likes and dislikes or interests, you would be able to personalise the gift hamper a bit more.
General tips for gift hampers Unless intended as a religious gift hamper, try and avoid religious messages or themes. Christmas, for example, is not celebrated by everyone, but the message of "Happy Holiday" would not be unwelcome and would therefore also work for everyone.
Be original! There is nothing worse than receiving the same gift each year. It becomes mundane and is taken for granted. If you are making use of the professional services of a specialist, they should be able to suggest creative, fun and different ideas to make you stand out from the crowd.
The assortment of items in a gift hamper makes it perfect for families or groups. Instead of buying individual gifts for everyone, each person can instead choose his or her favourite item from the hamper. This way everybody is happy with what they receive without the added effort for you.
A gift hamper doesn't have to be sent only on special occasions. In itself it can create a celebration if sent on an ordinary day, making someone's day special. With luxury and elegance, you can unexpectedly treat someone and if you should choose, keep them entertained with your choice of gifts in the hamper. This will truly make it an unforgettable moment, not to mention the appreciation you'll receive for your thoughtful gesture.

Easy (and Fun) Craft Projects For Boys
By Jamie Jefferson
Girls seem to be naturally attracted to arts and crafts, but boys are sometimes a different matter. If you're running a summer camp, holding a crafts party or just want to get your sons involved in a neat project, you may be scratching your head when it comes to craft ideas. Fortunately, there are several categories of crafts that attract boys of all ages.
Nature Crafts
Nature crafts are a good choice for boys. This allows them to go out into the wilderness and gather the materials.
A great nature craft idea is "Forest Friends." These crafts are easy to make and will allow the boys to work off some of that excess energy. Take them to the park and ask them to gather leaves, twigs and pinecones.
When you return back home from the park, let the boys decorate their finds with googly eyes and puff balls. Use Gorilla Glue or another multi-purpose glue that will adhere to the natural surfaces. Make faces on the leaves and pinecones, and then attach the twigs for bodies. You can make limbs from construction paper and the boys will have nature-inspired puppets to play with for the rest of the day.
Character Crafts
Boys like creating crafts that help them pretend they are their favorite heroes and characters. Pirates are very popular these days, so any pirate-related crafts will be well received. You can provide the supplies to make a construction paper or sewn felt eye patches, depending on the age of the boys.
Every pirate needs a parrot, so there's another simple craft idea. Use old toilet paper tubes, feathers and markers so each boy can have a personal parrot sidekick. Boys will also enjoy making treasure chests from old shoeboxes and treasure maps to find their loot from paper bags and markers.
Science Crafts.
If you have an older group of boys to entertain with crafts, don't underestimate the power of science-themed crafts. These crafts are part science experiment, part craft. One example of a science themed craft is invisible writing. For this craft, you'll need a laxative tablet, one tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, cotton balls and ammonia.
Crush the tablet into a container and then add the alcohol. Have the boys use paintbrushes to create their secret messages. As the ink dries, it will disappear. To see the message, simple have them rub the pieces of paper with cotton balls soaked in ammonia. It's not the most pleasant smelling craft, but it sure is a lot of fun!
As long as you keep boys active and engaged, they'll have as much fun with crafts as girls do. Although they aren't patient enough for beaded lanyards, they have activities and interests that can engage them just as much. So before you assume that boys and crafts just don't mix, try some of these ideas.

Paper Craft - The Art Of Making Paper For Gifts
By Helen Dickson
We often consider making paper to be a very complicated, skilled process and of course, that can be true. But it's not hard to craft paper yourself at home with very little equipment. The only special item you'll need is a mould. This is a wooden frame with a mesh stretched across it to act as a filter or sieve. It's very simple to make your own mould - just fasten four pieces of wood together in a rectangular shape to make the frame. Use 3/4" x 2" wood (20 x 50 mm) and make the inner dimensions of the frame the size of the paper you want to make. The frame needs to be about 2" (200 mm) in depth. Then cover the frame with tightly stretched mesh - mosquito net or just a piece of net curtain is fine. Make sure it's securely fastened to the edge of the frame. You'll also need a large container to hold water, about the size of a baby bath.
Now you're ready - let's get started! To make the pulp collect together a variety of unwanted paper (this craft is great for recycling). avoid newspaper (not pretty) and glossy magazines (the gloss makes them unsuitable) but you can use tissues, art paper, envelopes, discarded letter paper or copier paper - these are all suitable. Then tear the paper into about 1" (25 mm) square pieces and soak it in water. The soaking time depends on the paper you're using. Tissues will take under an hour, while high quality paper may take up to 3 days. Using hot water will speed up the process.
The next step is to macerate the paper in a blender or food processor. Add a couple of cups of water to each small handful of the paper. (225 ml). You only want to blend until the fibres separate, so be cautious and use short bursts. If you blend for too long your paper will be very smooth and you won't have that rustic, handmade quality which is so attractive. Put the blended pulp into another container. A blenderful will make about 1 letter-sized sheet, so continue until you've blended as much as you think you'll need.
Now comes the even more fun part - making the paper! You can add all sorts of small things to give your paper an individual feel. For a country theme add some tiny feathers or pressed leaves and flowers. For Christmas or a child's party you can add sparkles, or tiny foil shapes. If you'd like to colour the paper, you can use natural dyes like blueberry or beetroot juice, onion skins, turmeric or coffee grounds, or you can purchase commercial dyes from craft stores. Just stir your dye into the pulp, adding a little at a time until you have the colour you want. Remember though, the colour will lighten as the pulp dries.
Stir the pulp well and dip your frame vertically into the far side of your container then, in one smooth movement, tip it towards you so it's lying horizontally beneath the pulp and lift it out, holding it level. Then, quickly, before the water's drained away, give it a little shake to even it out. Don't wait too long before doing this or the paper will become too dry and tear when you shake it. If this happens, just scrape it back into the container and try again.
Leave your frame to drain, then place in a warm place to dry out. This will take anything from 2 - 24 hours. Then peel it from the frame using a palette knife. That's it - you're done! Crafting your own homemade paper is a great family activity - why not get the kids involved too?
Don't forget to wrap up in aprons to keep them clean and dry, do take a look at these great designs for kids.
You can use your paper as a whole sheet, or fold it to make cards and matching envelopes. Crafting home made paper is a wonderful way to recycle - and if you enjoy recycling and vintage products, check out our vintage linen aprons, all made from genuine antique European linen.
