Create An Interesting Design For Your Quilt with Simple Shapes

ที่ 9:13 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Penny Halgren

Quilts and quilt designs are created when the quilt maker combines blocks.
A block is the basic unit of a quilt top. Typically blocks are square. They can be made any size, and frequently a quilt is made using many blocks with the same design. They can be pieced together from smaller pieces (called patches) or could be appliqué. It is also possible that a block could be a solid piece of fabric.

The smaller components of a block are called patches. They can be many different shapes - triangles, rectangles, squares, diamonds, or curves - but the idea is to sew patches together so you end up with a square.

By changing the shapes of the patches within a block (i.e., substituting triangles for squares) and/or changing the placement of the colors of the pieces (i.e., you can create a new design for your quilt, yet the sewing won't change.

Simple is the name of the game for many quilters. Using one or two shapes for all of the pieces in your quilt makes it easy to sew; and easy-to-sew squares and triangles offer many advantages in terms of simplicity. As a beginner quilter, making the sewing simple gives you the opportunity to focus on learning and practicing basic quilt making techniques that you will use as you develop your craft.

Interesting variations in quilt blocks can be achieved through placement of the fabrics in addition to how each patch is divided.

A simple nine patch quilt block can be used as an example of how different a block can look just by changing the placement of colors within the nine patches of one block.

Using only two colors of fabric in alternating squares creates a design like a checkerboard. With the same nine patch of two colors of fabric, using only square patches in each block, you can create a pattern that looks like a big X in your quilt simply by placing the colors in a particular position in each block. Thus, the Irish Chain, and variations of it.

Getting a little more complex, you can take some of the square patches in the blocks and divide them in half from corner to corner (commonly called half-square triangles in the quilting world), and create a star design.

Using only half-square triangles and square patches, by simply re-arranging the fabrics, your checkerboard or square turns into a basket, or leaf shape, a bow tie shape, or even a series of diamonds.

Another type of triangle that is easy to make is a quarter-square triangle. That triangle is made by cutting a square patch into half-square triangles, and then cutting the half-square triangles in half once more, thus creating four small isosceles triangles.

You can add complexity to your design by increasing the number of colors in your quilt, and your design changes once again. What once was a black and white checkerboard can transform into a block that looks like the letter H.

Your block can look like it is 3-dimensional by using specific colors in designated places.
And all of those design changes can be created by using only three basic shapes - squares, half-square triangles and quarter-square triangles - plus a little imagination in the placement of your colors.

As you sew your blocks together, they can look completely different. For example, you could take blocks of two simple half-square triangles, place them in columns, alternate the direction of the cut of the triangle, and create a quilt that looks like columns of zigzags. Using the same blocks, placing them so all of the diagonals are facing the same direction, your quilt could look like an old-fashioned scrap quilt.

Playing Cards - King Of Games

ที่ 9:12 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Mike Joe

Playing cards probably, is the best way to while out time. No one can argue that one of the worst feelings in the world is to get stuck in a position when one does not know what to do. A position where in one has time but nothing constructive to do to while that time out. This is the time everyone dares as it is toughest to see it off. And the worst part is that it takes an eternity to get finished. Still people have come up with different ideas to make good such a period. Some of the popular means of whiling out such torturous phase is by listening to music, or reading novels or books, watching favourite, recorded programmes etc. None, of these options, however, are interesting enough. Rather than warding of boredom they actually would further complicate the issue.

All these options are such that they would have been repeated so many times that there wouldn't be any excitement or thrill left in them. The best way to while out time, therefore, is by playing games, especially, indoor games. These can be enjoyed by young and old alike and can be played anywhere. Some such games are chess, Chinese checker, ludo, carom etc. However, all these pale into insignificance when pitted against cards. A game which can justifiably termed as a game for kings and king of games. Indeed, playing cards is the best way of warding of boredom and making good use of time. No wonder it enjoys such a great acceptance across the world.
For a man who is watching people playing cards it might appear to be boring but ask this to people who are playing cards and they would tell you that there is nothing more exciting than playing cards. It is also very taxing for it requires a sound mind to understand the situation and plan in a way that victory does not remain elusive. It requires calculation of highest order without which one simply cannot think of winning a game of cards.

And one who becomes a master of playing cards it can very easily be said that he has a very sound, analytical and razor sharp brain. Without which any card player would be lost. This is perhaps the reason that a game which probably started as a means to while out time has today reached a position where it has become a craze and envy of all games.

Christmas - Decorate Your House And Rooms - Ideas And Tips

ที่ 4:46 AM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Francisco Monaco

Do you want a beautiful decoration this Christmas? Well, I'll show you how. A very common mistake I see in most of the houses I have visited on Christmas, is that only the "important" parts of the house, such as the living room or the dining room are decorated. The most important parts, or at least those where the people spend more time, such as the bathrooms and kitchen, are not. So, here are some tips.

There's nothing better than having full-of-Christmas rooms, especially for your kids, and there are many things you can do, such as putting a small Christmas tree in one of the corners, and those classical lights in the window. Another very fun thing to do is pouring fake snow all over the furniture and other objects in the room, it gives a beautiful Christmas sensation, plus, as I said before, is a VERY fun thing to do. You can also decorate your home rooms with posters, which are easy to get and place.

What about bathrooms? You can always place those classical Christmas covers for your toilet, and all that similar stuff like the bathtub curtains, and the carpet. Also, you always have the alternative of the fake snow, and in the bathroom, looks just as fine as in the rooms. And you can put a Christmas door wreath, it always looks fine.

And finally, the kitchen. For me, the kitchen is a very important part of the house, and your hardly ever find a decorated one. So, leave that behind and change it. You definitively have to get some Christmas flowers, at least one, and put it in a corner. You also should place wreaths on the doors, they give a very cozy and elegant look. You can always get posters. Imagine your kitchen with a beautiful cook-Santa framed poster, or a funny snow man made of cream and fruits - they look terrific, here you can look for some samples.

The most important thing about decorating your house on Christmas is to share it with the people you care for. So remember, keep it simple, keep it fun.

Fabric Paint A Baby Shirt

ที่ 4:34 AM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Benetta Strydom

I was recently invited to a stork party and wanted to take a special gift for the soon-to-be-born baby boy, without breaking the bank in the process. I came across a lovely white tee shirt, and a brown pair of shorts. I decided to do some fabric painting to turn the tee shirt into something special. I chose an African design, but any other design will work just as well.

Materials:One white tee shirt for a baby ~ I bought one for a baby of 3-6 months.A light blue water erasable pen to draw the design on the tee shirt.Fabric paint in two colors: Brown and Orange. One fine paintbrush.A few sheets of white paper.Iron and ironing board.

Instructions for making the project:
1. Before starting with the paint project, rinse the tee shirt in cold water to remove any sizing in the material. Do not add fabric softener.
2. Allow the tee shirt to dry properly and iron it lightly to remove any wrinkles from the material.
3. Draw a design onto the front of the tee shirt, using the light blue water erasable pen. I chose the footprint of a lion ~ but any other design may be used.
4. Add a few clean sheets of white paper between the front and back parts of the tee shirt, so that the paint won't smudge the back of the tee shirt.
5. Paint the lion's footprint with the Brown fabric paint. Use the paint in undiluted form.
6. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before continuing with the next step of the project.
7. Make a watery mix of the Brown and Orange fabric paint, and use this to color the background.
8. Again, allow the paint to dry thoroughly before continuing with the next step of the project.
9. Add a caption phrase that will fit in with the design. In this case, I added the words "Born 2 B Wild." Finish it off by adding a decorative border around the design.
10. Allow the paint to dry again.11. Set iron on tee shirt's recommended maximum heat and iron the tee shirt on the reverse side.

Handmade Toys - Some Tips For Getting Started In A Making Toys

ที่ 7:23 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Carm Paynter

According to some North American media reports there are a lot of imported toys being finished with paints containing lead. Large numbers of these imports have been recalled, hopefully we found them all. Considering the number of toys that are imported and the possibility of getting lead paint off these toys one could wonder what the alternative might be.

Some of us who are already retired or at least have some free time should be considering making wooden toys as one of our retirement hobbies. I'm also suggesting to you that there is a substantial market for handmade toys and this latest import problem has just increased that market. The type of handmade toys you choose to make will be determined by your interests and what you determine would be most popular in your area.

Start by getting yourself established with a good supplier of the materials you will need to make wooden toys or any other type of handmade toy you desire to make. You should never use sub-standard materials. I emphasize that quality is especially important for toys, they will get a lot of use and abuse. Quality is important for all practical items that your customers will use on a daily basis. A poorly fabricated toy or anything else you make, will get you a lot of unhappy folks, especially kids and you will quickly lose any customers you had.

Once you have established a relationship with a supplier for your supplies, you will need to consider what's needed in your area and what form your advertising should take. There are several ways in which you can market your toy products. Having a web site that you could direct clients to for a look at the toys you make is a fantastic way to get your name out there and to showcase your work. People who shop online are quick to refer you to their friends if they have had a pleasant experience and are happy with the outcome of their online toy purchase.

Local events and opportunities such as arts and crafts fairs, flea markets, farm markets, trade shows, small outlet stores and even mall kiosks are all possible retail resources that you should investigate. Marketing your own toy designs to specialty stores is a great way to start your home toy business. Make sure you maintain your level of quality throughout your business dealings and sales process. Anything less will have a negative impact on your success.

Giving some of your toys to fund raising drives, silent charity auctions and regular charity auctions that are high profile will get you excellent exposure. Your work will be associated with the high quality of the event. A charity auction is usually designed to raise funds and attracts the people who are eager to buy items at these auctions. Your work will get a lift in the eyes of these people just from your association with the event. This could lead to future sales if you market yourself properly during the event. It's even worth giving away some of your toys so you can say that "so and so" has some of your work. This kind of marketing can only improve your credibility in your local area.

Remember we have protection for intellectual property in the form of design copyrights to be considered. If a customer has a copyrighted design that s/he would like for you to fabricate don't forget this. However, the best part of all of this, the plus side, you can copyright your own designs. Consider this if you design a popular product no matter what it is. This could lead to increased revenues in your Home Based Business. Be vigilant and always try to improve your creation to make it the best it can be before copyrighting.

Sewing Pattern Symbols - What On Earth Do They Mean?

ที่ 1:24 AM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Barbara Evans

The symbols marked on paper pattern pieces look to some of us like they have been written in a foreign language and can be somewhat bewildering.

Let me explain in simple terms what the most common symbols on the paper pattern mean.

Cutting Line. This is found on the edge of each pattern piece and often has a symbol of a pair of scissors. Cut out each paper pattern you need for your garment from the large paper sheet. Use paper scissors, not your good material scissors. Paper can blunt scissors quickly.

Stitching Line. This is the line to stitch along when joining fabric together
Seam Allowance. This is the width of fabric that extends between the stitching line and edge of the fabric or cutting line. The normal seam allowance is 1.5cm or 5/8in, but check your pattern seam allowance before stitching.

Directional Sewing. The stitching line is marked with small arrows showing you what way to stitch, eg. always stitch the skirt side seams from waist to hemline, the fabric will sit better and have a more professional look.

Grain line. This is a straight line with an arrow at one or each end.The strong or warp threads run parrallel to the selvage. The selvage is the woven edge of the fabric.

The weaker or weft threads run from selvage to selvage. The arrows at each end of the grain line must be the same distance from the fold or selvage. Many a garment has been sewn and "will not sit straight' because the grain lines are "off centre." There are also grain lines on the fold, on the bias (45o) and on the weft threads.

Dart Fold Line and Dart Sewing Line. Darts are a stitched fold of fabric tapering to a point and are used to shape the garment to fit the curves of the body. Fold the dart along the dart fold line and stitch along the dart sewing line and press. Press skirt and shoulder darts towards the centre and bust and elbow darts downwards.

Notches. Notches are diamond shapes situated along a seam line and are used to match seams together, eg. joining the centre back seam together. The notches are cut out in a diamond shape from the seam line.

Pattern Piece Name. Indicates the name of each pattern piece. Please get in the habit of having the pattern piece name facing upwards as you pin the pattern onto the fabric.

The Number. This indicates how many pieces to cut out, eg. Sleeve Cut 2.
Shorten and Lengthen Lines. These lines indicate the position to shorten and lengthen the pattern pieces.

Gathering Lines. These are usually broken lines beginning and ending with a notch. Gather between the notches.

Buttonhole Positions. These are the markings to stitch the buttonholes. Always try on garment first to check the buttonholes positions are in the correct place for you. Some of us like them a bit lower or higher.

When you have cut out the pattern and removed it from the fabric, always fold it up neatly and place back in the envelope. Attach a piece of the garment fabric onto the envelope so in months to come you will always know what pattern you used for what garment. Place patterns neatly in a storage box, they are expensive to purchase and we can be used time and time again.

I hope you have now untangled some of the strange markings, dots and dashes you will find on paper patterns so remember Sewing is fun, so be creative and in no time your wardrobe will be bulging with lovely designer clothes.

Happy Sewing and Enjoy your Day.

Senior Care - It's Never Too Late to Quilt

ที่ 12:18 AM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Raymond Degg

Quilting is for all times and all ages. In our retirement years, the craft seems to grow in its appeal and meaning. With innovative new tools, the hobby is even more accessible to seniors. It's the perfect way to relax, keep yourself occupied, and utilize your imagination in a meaningful way.

For ages, quilting has been a rich chapter in women's history. The quilt is like a canvas to paint our stories and memories. Our needles are our brushes. Quilting groups are quite popular and often meet once a week to socialize, snack, and create rich works of textile art. The popular film, How To Make An American Quilt (1995), is a great example of this.

Although it seems like quilting would be nearly impossible for elders with certain difficulties like low vision, arthritis, or back problems to enjoy, in reality there are some simple tricks that can help a lot.

Try raising your work surface to relieve minor back and neck aches. Table-leg raisers are shaped similarly to plastic cones and go right under the legs of your table. This handy device will keep you from bending uncomfortably over your work space, keeping you relaxed and efficient for a longer period of time.

If you have trouble with your eyesight, quilting can seem like an impossible task. However, you can find at your local craft store a needle- threader with a magnifying lens built right in. Also look out for sewing machines that have an automatic threader to relieve you of this task altogether. There are magnifying lenses available that are mounted on the neckline and angled so that when you lean forward you look straight through the lens and onto your work. Again, ask your local hobby store to assist you.

If you have difficulty using your hands for finely detailed stitching, use the more traditional method of "tying" on your quilt-top. With this method, use widely-spaced yarn ties to join the quilt, instead of countless smaller stitches. You can also use a larger needle for this method, which is very helpful.

You may choose to machine-quilt your quilt-tops. Using an electric sewing machine will speed up the process, and makes it easier for arthritic hands. You might think about having an affordable machine-owner do the quilt top for you after you do the piecing. At-home entrepreneurs will run a quilt through a long-art quilting machine and charge only a modest fee. They might also provide binding materials and backing as well.

With these simple tools and techniques, seniors can continue to quilt well into their retirement years with ease and enjoyment.

Sewing A Straight Line - Easy Effective Tips

ที่ 12:18 AM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Barbara Evans

Do you sometimes have trouble sewing a straight line?
Some sewers merrily stitch a perfectly straight line while blithely singing to the radio, while others of us work so hard at it with great concentration and get so frustrated when the results end up looking like the wanderings of an inebriated spider. We end up breaking needles, tangling the bobbin thread and then feel like giving up sewing altogether.

Well, there is no need for all that, as I will show you a very easy way to learn how to stitch a straight line.

- Sit comfortably at your sewing machine, remove the thread and the bobbin and take your foot away from the pedal.

- Take a piece of firm pad paper and place the bulk of the paper to the left of the machine needle.

- Using the hand wheel turn by hand, until the needle is nearly into the paper

- Measure 1.5cm or 5/8in from the point of the needle to the right hand edge of the paper. This is your seam allowance and is usually the standard on most patterns using woven fabric.

- Now stitch, keeping your eye on the distance between the side of the presser foot and the edge of the paper and keeping the same distance as you stitch along. This will produce a perfect straight seam with the exact width of the seam allowance.

- Never look at the needle going up and down, you will feel dizzy or may even feel sick.
If you do not have a seam or measurement guides on the bed of your sewing machine, place a piece of tape next to the straight edge of paper. You will have a permanent guide to run the edge of the fabric along.

Now try the same with some fabric.

- Cut two pieces of sample fabric about 20cm (8in) x 30cm (12in) and pin edges together.

- Using Tailors Chalk, draw two horizontal lines about 6 cm (2 1/2in) down from the top and up from the bottom of the sample.

- Practise stitching between the lines, keeping the stitch lines 1.5cm or 5/8in apart. Remember to reverse and trim loose threads at the beginning and ends of each seam.

- On other sample pieces of fabric, draw large "S" and "W" shapes and practise stitching around the shapes a few times, keeping the seam allowance the same width as you stitch. You may have to pivot at the corners.

- To pivot, lower the needle into the fabric, lift the presser foot and turn the fabric around, thus turning the corner.

- Lower the presser foot and continue sewing. You will use this method of pivoting a lot in your sewing endeavours.

If you practise these simple exercises you will soon be able to sew straight, accurate rows. Keep your samples in a safe place, so in a few months time you can look back and see how much your sewing has improved. This feedback, the reflection of what you can achieve, provides great motivation for practising in and improving your other sewing skills.

Quilting Material – The Soul Of A Quilt

ที่ 8:43 PM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By Michelle Bery

A quilt made with love, forever holds love inside it; reflecting the passion of the quilter and the care they put into every stitch. But along with the skill and love for quilting that goes into each quilt, is the quilting material itself. While there is general quilting material that is used across the board, each quilt distinguishes itself by the style, color, and texture of the quilting material that is selected.

One of the benefits of quilting in general is the freedom of creativity it provides the quilter. The choices of quilting material are only limited by the quilt maker’s imagination; what results is a truly unique quilt that completely reflects the personality of the quilter. The quilting material that you choose wholly determines the look and feel of your finished quilt.

Generations ago, quilts were constructed out of need, and quilt makers used the scraps of fabric that were available to them, resulting in a mosaic of quilting material of all different styles, colors, and textures. There was beauty in this simplicity and these quaint quilts of yesteryear are often still cherished keepsakes today.

The quilts of today are infinitely more sophisticated, but the idea is still the same – take a myriad of quilting material that may not stand on its own but, together, results in a cohesive and stunning design. Pulling the quilting material together is the job of the quilt maker – choosing fabric, and with the use of quilting needles and thread – constructing a masterpiece based on a personal design or one found through a quilting template.

Quilting material can be found at a variety of fabric stores where you can shop at your leisure and explore different templates and designs. There are online offerings as well through a variety of websites.

Take your time choosing your quilting material. The result will be a quilt that reflects the quality and workmanship that you put into it.

Model Train Collectors Don't Always Operate Their Trains

ที่ 5:27 AM 0 ความคิดเห็น
By B. Murphy

They might sound pretty similar, but the fact is there is a difference between model train enthusiasts and model train collectors. It may be minor, but it does exist! A collector is usually more interested in the rarity of an item and may simply want to display it rather than actually operate a model railroad themselves.

Collectors exist for almost every object and hobby in the world. They're the ones who drive the costs of that first-issue Batman comic through the roof and the ones who simply 'must have' that rare item that no one else really cares about just because of the fact that it is rare.

These people are the ones who help to set the value of the equipment as well as the standards used to grade it. They often spend a great deal of time and energy learning all they can about the history of various model trains and other related equipment. In reality though, many collectors aren't happy to simply display their trains - they want to run them on an operating layout as well.

Companies like Lionel Trains even go so far as to sponsor collectors' clubs for their past equipment. There are plenty of groups you can join if you're interested in learning more about the hobby.

One of the things clubs help to do is set standards such as the following by which items are judged. Normally the product itself is graded separately from the box, and collector's value highest items that are in a 'new' or 'like new' box that have never been removed.
Model Train Grading

* NEW - In original condition, most likely never used or even removed from the package.

* LIKE NEW - Good as new with no damage but likely removed from the packaging at some point.

*EXCELLENT - Excellent condition means there is no rust, dirt or damage but that the item has definitely been used.

* VERY GOOD - Could have a bit of wear but no damage, rust or other blemishes.

* GOOD - There may be some slight scratches as well as normal wear but no rust.

* FAIR - Slightly damaged, worn and possibly scratched but still quite usable.

* POOR - Serious damage, may not even work. Likely only used for parts to repair better specimens.

How Containers And Packaging Are Graded

* NEW - Original packaging in the original condition with no damage or fading.

* LIKE NEW - Original packaging, may have some slight wear.

* EXCELLENT - Like-original packaging with only moderate wear, no repairs.

* VERY GOOD - May have some tears or damage possible non-original tape but complete.

* GOOD - Some elements may be missing, some wear and possibly even minor mildew damage.

* FAIR - Pieces missing and tears and/or discoloration are possible.

* R - A replica, not the original packaging.

If you're starting out with model train collecting, knowing your grades is important. Then pick the era and/or brand you want to pursue and get started.
