Gemstones For Jewellery Making

The Earth yields up a rich variety of gemstones that can be used in jewellery making, with every hue and colour imaginable available to incorporate into stunning pieces that will compliment any outfit. The choice of which gemstone to include in a piece is purely down to the individual and is subject to all kinds of influences including birthdate, fashion or even superstition.
Birthstones are a good place to start. Each zodiac sign has a particular gemstone associated with it, and giving someone a piece of jewellery that incorporates that stone shows the recipient that much more thought has gone into the piece. The gemstones range from the lavish such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies, to the more subtle like moonstone and lapis lazuli. Because of the sheer range of gemstones available, you can spend as little or as much as you like and still have a beautiful piece of jewellery with a hidden meaning, which will be cherished by the recipient.
Breaking down gemstones by colour is also an alternative. If you like red but can't afford to buy a high quality ruby, then you could look at cheaper alternatives such as garnets or spinel. Spinel can range in colour to a delicate pink through to a deep red and can look every bit as stunning as a ruby. Garnets offer a deeper shade of red with hints of violet and purple in them. They're popular in eastern jewellery and can be used to produce exotic looking jewellery at a fraction of the cost of most rubies.
For blue stones, sapphires are the first choice, but even though these range in colour, quality and price, there are other alternatives. A particular favourite is the deep royal blue of lapis lazuli, which is often flecked with gold within the stone. This can produce a stunning effect with gold findings. Lapis can also be bought as beads as well as cabochons, meaning that the stone can be used in necklaces or as a setting for a ring, for example. Kunzite is another alternative that has a violet tint and is a relatively cheap alternative to precious gemstones such as sapphires.
Not strictly a gemstone but still valued highly in jewellery making, amber is a perennial favourite. Its warm, golden tone compliments silver findings perfectly and it has a honey-like lustre that is hard to resist. It can be a difficult gem to work with as it is very soft, but the results it produces are well worth the effort. Baltic amber is the most highly prized, but Middle Eastern amber can range in tone from a golden yellow to a deep red.
The most obvious green gemstone to go for is emerald, and surprisingly these can be far less expensive than you first think. Again, quality stones will cost more, but if you're willing and capable of doing a little work to refine a lower quality stone the effects can still be beautiful. Peridot is a cheaper alternative and is a much paler green with a translucency that is extremely delicate and effective for use with small findings.
The opal carries a great deal of superstition with it, but is probably one of the most beautiful gemstones to work with. It ranges from a milky white to deep blue or even the rare 'fire opal', which is like a small firework captured in stone. Its ability to catch the light and produce a rainbow of colours is dazzling, and opal retains its popularity even today.
There are thousands of gemstones to choose from, and a good supplier will carry a full selection, ranging from top-quality emeralds and rubies right through to cheaper but no less beautiful alternatives. Don't be afraid of including gemstones in your jewellery making - the results can be inspiring.

Organizing Craft Supplies - Creative Tips on How to Manage Your Craft Clutter

If you happen to be like me and love making crafts, then you may find yourself with a drawer full of little craft supplies, with no organization. Things like ribbons, loose beads, jewelry findings, glue sticks, sequins, and scraps of decorative paper are things that can be hard to find a place for. A lot of craft supplies, like beads, come in tiny plastic bags that are stapled at the top. Once you open them, they are hard to keep closed again and things can fall out and get lost.
Not only can things get lost, but everything can become disorganized very quickly. When you sit down to do a craft project again, you may lack motivation since you can't find anything, or waste a lot of time looking for supplies. If this sounds like you, then read on because I would like to share with you some helpful tips on organizing your craft supplies.
The first thing you need to do if you haven't done so already is to designate a craft place to keep everything. The size of this space depends on how much you have. Perhaps a drawer in a dresser is enough room, or for those with larger collections you may need to designate a closet. Closets are wonderful spaces in which you can add several shelves within it to stack boxes of craft items. If a closet is unavailable, consider buying a dresser or bookshelf that will only be dedicated to storing your craft supplies.
Once you have your location, you will want to organize your supplies into different boxes. At home I use the clear plastic shoe boxes with removable lids, so that I can see the contents inside. Divide your craft supplies into categories. Using some labeling tape (or make some labels on your computer), clearly mark what is inside each shoe box. Here are examples of the boxes I have labeled in my own craft closet: ribbons and cords, glues and varnishes, paints, jewelry making items, felt and foam board, pipe cleaners, embroidery floss, hot glue gun and glue sticks, tissue paper and decoupage paper... and so on. Some items may need a different size box. For example, I use a shirt box for my felt and foam board pieces.
Paintbrushes and pipe cleaners can be stored in an empty coffee can or chip can. I keep all my scrap booking papers and templates in a portable hanging folder case. My scrap booking glue, scissors, markers, and stamps all fit nicely in a craft supply box (which resembles a fishing tackle box). I choose to have these items together and in portable since I don't always scrapbook at home.
Small jars are perfect for keeping tiny craft items. Begin keeping your eyes open and saving all small jars when you finish with them in the kitchen. Baby food jars are great, but other condiments come in perfect size jars too. I've kept some small jars from gourmet mustard, sun dried tomatoes, and capers! These jars can keep safety pins, sequins, seed beads, jewelry findings, or anything small. The jars can then be stored within a shoe box. For easy finding, label the top of the jar lid with what is inside. I even tape the item to the lid (such as the sequin, or the safety pin) so I know exactly what is inside by just opening the box and looking at my jar lids. Craft stores also sell organizational supplies for your small items. The plastic compartmentalized boxes are great for storing beads.
Getting organized helps you by saving time when you do your next craft. You will know exactly what supplies you have on hand and when you are getting low on something. Plus your craft area will look great!

Easy Ideas For Storing Craft Supplies

Craft, in its many different forms, requires a variety of tools and supplies. Even if a person enjoys just one craft, they will find themselves struggling to find a safe home for all of the accouterments. When one dabbles in several crafts, as I do, then that issue multiplies to an almost overwhelming problem.
A place to keep all those scissors and needles, glues, pens, paints, and papers, ribbons and wool becomes essential to keep the items safe from damage and easy to access. Without a storage system, things easily become lost or ruined. It also contributes to a lack of productivity. Fortunately for the avid crafter, there are many storage solutions, which are either low cost or free to do. Many of them involve a little crafty handwork, too.
Small objects such as buttons and beads can be stored in almost any container from clean jars to empty matchboxes. For a tidy idea, collect empty matchboxes, and glue together to form a stack four by four. Wrap around the edge with decorative paper, leaving the ends uncovered. Make a hole in the front of each matchbox insert and thread through wool or ribbon, leaving a small loop on the outside as a handle. Tape the ends to the inside of the box. If desired, glue a sample of the contents to the front of each insert. You can make this set of 'drawers' as large as you need. Try making two stacks and join them back to back for a more stable creation, plus twice the storage.
Ready-made plastic drawers are available for such purposes. They are an ideal solution to storage problems however the cost is much greater.
Empty boxes are fantastic for keeping all sorts of supplies flat and clean. I use a pretty gift box someone gave me one Christmas to keep all my Christmas stamps together. A flat chocolate box houses pictures trimmed from a magazine, and another one for scraps of paper suitable for punching.
Small empty bottles, such as the kind used for vitamin supplements make ideal storage containers for left over punched shapes. I make use of people's punches I do not own and punch as many as I can fit into a bottle in a variety of colours. Simply glue one to the lid for easy recognition. I then keep the bottles together in an ice cream container. A box would work well, too.
Many crafts involve numerous supplies of paper of all sorts. The perfect solution to store these is a concertina file -- the sort that people often use to store old bills or important documents. Label each pocket with a colour and simply file each sheet in its appropriate slot. There are enough partitions to separate them even further. I have two pockets for each colour, one for plain and one for textured. It is not only a user-friendly way to locate the colour you need for a project; its portability is excellent for those craft sessions with friends.
Store balls of wool in ice creams containers. The lid will keep it dust and bug free. They are also easy to stack in a cupboard or wardrobe. Similarly, keep spools of ribbon tidy in a box or plastic container.
Invest in some cheap clear files. I have one to house sticker sheets, grouped according to theme. Another one holds patterns and instructions on various craft projects. A third one I reserve for photos. When sorting photos for a scrapbook I put a page's worth in each pocket. Then when I have time to make up a scrapbook page, the photos are already organised.
